Monumental Inscription

In loving memory of James Lonsdale Cox, born January 31st 1845, died January 1st 1915.

He served God, and was cheerful.

Also of Fanny, his dear wife, fifth daughter of the late James Ellis born, April 13th 1844, fell asleep Nov. 10th 1921.

May light perpetual shine on them.

Also Harold Lonsdale Cox, son of the above, who died February 13th 1881, aged 8 years.

Also Ammon Willis Whitehead, of London, son-in-law of the above killed in the Dardanelles, August 31st 1915, aged 29 years.

What is death when endured that love, justice, truth and honour may be upheld. A.W.W.

Also Emily Winifred, younger daughter of Fanny and James Lonsdale Cox, wife of Ammon W. Whitehead cremated at Rawdon 20th Feb. 1969.

Lance Corporal Ammon Willis Whitehead

Ammon Willis Whitehead was a London Civil Servant in the Valuation Department. He was the son of Amos P. Mary Willis Whitehead, of Hyde. On 10th March 1915, he married Emily Winifred Cox, younger daughter of (the late) John Lonsdale and Fanny Cox, of Halifax at the Park Congregational Church, Crouch End. Then a lance corporal in the "C" Coy.1st/11th Bn. London Regiment (Finsbury Rifles), he was killed in the Dardanelles on 31st August 1915, aged 29 years.

Emily survived him by over 53 years, dying in Yorkshire in 1969, aged 93 years.

He was buried at the 7th Field Ambulance Cemetery, Turkey (including Gallipoli), grave reference Sp. Mem. C.3. (CWGC)

Ammon Willis Whitehead is commemorated at Lister Lane Cemetery on the gravestone of grave number 1042
