Emperor Pickersgill is commemorated at Lister Lane Cemetery on the gravestone of grave number 1676

Also John Thomas Heywood died Aug. 26th 1908.

Also Private E. Pickersgill, killed in Italy, August 8th 1918.

Also Jemima Heywood widow of aforesaid died May 27th 1937.

Fred son of John Thomas and Jemima Heywood died Oct. 19th 1942 aged 58 years.

Before enlisting in July 1917, Emperor Pickersgill was employed as a butcher and slaughterer at the Halifax Slaughterhouse. Serving as a private with the 2nd Battalion, Border Regiment, he was sent to Italy on 8th November 1917. He was killed during a raid in August 1918, aged 30.

 

A Chaplain with the Italian E.F. wrote:

 

"...Your husband was killed whilst taking part in a raid against the Austrians on the night of August 8 and 9. It was an especially difficult task which was alloted to the men of our battalion, who took part in the raid, and they performed it with magnificent bravery and skill..."

He left behind a widow, Clara (nee Heywood) and two little girls.

 

Emperor, was the son of Fred and Elizabeth Ann Pickersgill, of 10, Holmfield Terrace, Holmfield, near Halifax. He was buried at Boscon British Cemetery, Italy, grave reference Plot 2. Row D. Grave 6. (CWGC)
